New to VATSIM?

Flying on VATSIM can seem intimidating at first, but controllers in ZNY are here to help! Here are some tips to get started:

  • Review airport charts before your flight
  • Listen to or read the ATIS and be prepared with the information letter
  • Have your route filed before contacting Clearance Delivery
  • Check for TDLS text clearances - they appear as ACARS messages in your pilot client
  • Don't be afraid to ask for help - controllers would rather clarify than have confusion
  • Practice radio calls offline before your first online flight
  • Start with VFR flights at quieter airports to build confidence
  • Speed: Maximum 250 knots below 10,000 feet MSL
  • Transition Altitude: In the USA, set altimeter to 29.92 above FL180
